AE
MOHABBAT
The curtains open to this soulful ghazal originally sung by
Begum Akhtar, now resung by Pandit Ajay Pohankar in his velvet
voice. Ae Mohabbat depicts the pain of separated lovers. The
contemporary instrumentation of this nostalgic number characterizes
Abhijit's latest new-age album Urban Raaga. |
PAAYALIYA
JHANKAAR
This piece resonates the timeless emotion - love.
Beautifully rendered by Pandit Ajay Pohankar, this bandish has
been sourced from age-old classical texts. It depicts the Abhisaarika
Naayika who pines for her beloved and broods upon her predicament.
Based on Raag Puriya Dhanashree, the musical composition and
choreography in this piece utilise traditional and contemporary
motifs. |
TARANA
Tarana refers to a composition in dance and music with rhythmic
patterns set to a melody. This form is said to have been created
600 years ago by the Sufi philosopher and musician Amir Khusrau.
Originally from Abhijit's album Sajanwa, our Tarana today is
based on Raag Chandrakauns sung by Arati Ankalikar Tikekar.
Cadenced undulations of the 12 beats of Ek Taal are a highlight
of this song. The Jugalbandhi, or friendly competition among
performers, adds to the excitement in this piece.

PIYA
MOSE BOL
This is a romantic duet from Abhijit's album Sajanwa. Ajayji
and Aratiji's voices set the mood for playful flirting between
the Nayak and Nayika. The guitar and English flutes, along with
Abhijit's Indian keyboards, add to the amorous mood of the song.

THUMRI
Thumris personify love, romance and beauty. This piece is a
tribute to the Gurus who have built a strong traditional foundation,
and encourage innovation in style. Pandit Ajay Pohankar, the
thumri maestro of current times, will render his favourite number
to which Ms. Madhu Nataraj will perform a solo Kathak piece
directed by Dr. Maya Rao. The message in the sequence is –
union and separation cannot exist without one another.
|
ECSTASY
This unique piece has Abhijit Pohankar interacting directly
with the dancers in conversations of melody, movement and rhythm.
Watch out for a pleasant surprise.

OVERTURE
IN RAAG KIRWANI
This is the grand finale of Sankalan. Abhijit begins with Aalap
on the keyboards, moving seamlessly into a rhythmic cycle with
tones of symphonic texture. Drama is on display in the amazing
skill with which Abhijit plays with the keys. Elements of the
tabla, guitar and the drums are progressively added as this
extraordinary composition builds to a crescendo. An improvised
piece, Overture in Raag Kirwani gives the listener a feeling
of completeness, a fitting end to the evening.
